[edit] Energy in the News – What Really Makes Wal-Mart Supercenters Super?
It is nice to know that there is a company that pushes for http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/clean+energy clean energy. Everyone is familiar with Wal-Mart. They are striving for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Efficient_energy_use energy efficiency and it has made energy news. If they are doing it, maybe other companies across America will strive for the same thing.
In 2005, Wal-Mart opened two stores in Texas and Colorado. These stores were to be used as experiments to test the technologies that were environmentally friendly. They put to use things such as http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/wind+power wind power to light-emitting http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/diodes diodes. One of Wal-Mart’s goals is to use less energy and produce less waste.
In 2007, they opened a store in Missouri that will use 20 percent less energy. They will implement things such as industry-leading heating and cooling refrigeration systems as a part of energy conservation. The High-Efficiency stores will use http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/skylights skylights to harvest daylight. These will use the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunlight natural sunlight and sensors will be placed to dim or even turn off the lights when they aren’t needed. In many of the Supercenters, you can see the skylights as soon as you walk into the store. In the freezer section, you may also see that the freezers are dark until you open them up.
Wal-Mart is also changing the way there fleet trucks are used. They will run on using cooking grease. They are also going to have a few that will be diesel http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hybrid hybrids and liquid http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/natural+gas natural gas trucks. Pushing for http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fuel+efficiency fuel-efficiency would be beneficial to the company as well as customers. Wal-Mart’s motto is “Save more, pay less”. This slogan is really meaningful. If one company is trying to make an environmental impact, why shouldn’t others.
If a company tries to be more efficient in the things they do, they would be able to deliver products at a lower price. The prices that are being paid for things such as gas for the fleets and maintain the store are usually high. Finding alternate ways to do the same thing with a smaller impact would allow them to lower the prices of their products. When this is done, more consumers would shop at the store, therefore making the company profitable.
Using alternative energy resources, natural resources or renewable resources has a great impact on everything. From the way we shop to the way we eat, there is an impact everywhere. Sometimes making small changes in the way we do things can be a huge benefit.
