Donating a car in Connecticut is easy, fast and free. When you donate your car, pick-up is done quickly, often within one business day. You can donate a car, boat or RV in the state of Connecticut regardless of its condition.

When you donate a car in the state of Connecticut, your car donation will allow you to claim a tax deduction through the charity’s tax classification with the IRS. Donating a car directly to charity is the best way to ensure you can claim your vehicle as a tax deduction. Besides that, donating a car directly to charity is the only way to be sure that the proceeds of the sale of your car donation go directly to the charity.

When you are ready to donate your car, boat or RV in the state of Connecticut, the quickest way to begin is to have the title. If you do not have the title to your intended vehicle donation you can apply for a replacement title. You must apply for a replacement title prior to donating your vehicle. When you are ready to donate your car, boat or RV, in order to properly transfer title in Connecticut you must sign on line 8 on the back of the title. If the vehicle is or was financed, the lien holder’s name should appear in the legal owner section and their release with counter signature is required in the lien release found on the front of the title.
The state of Connecticut does not require titles for any vehicles manufactured prior to 1981, motor boats or boats more than 19.5 feet that do not have a motor. Trailer titles are needed only if the trailer weighs more than 3000 lbs.

In order to release liability of your vehicle donation, the state of Connecticut requires that you remove the license plates and surrender them to the Connecticut Motor Vehicle Department. Be sure to get a receipt which you will need in order to remove your vehicle from the town’s property tax assessment list. If you can not get in to an office of the Connecticut Motor Vehicle Department you can mail the plates to: Connecticut Motor Vehicle Department, 60 State Street, Wethersfield, Connecticut 06161. If handling the liability of your vehicle donation by mail, you should include a letter of explanation as to why you are canceling the plates and include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return of your receipt.

As stated above, the state of Connecticut requires the license plates of your vehicle donation to be surrendered to a local branch of the Connecticut Motor Vehicle Department.
