Besides that, donating a car directly to charity is the only way to be sure that the proceeds of the sale of your car donation go directly to the charity.

When you are ready to donate your car, boat or RV in the state of Washington the quickest way to begin the process is to have the title to your car, boat or RV. If you do not have the title to the car, boat or RV you intend to donate, you can apply for a replacement title. You must apply for the replacement title prior to donating your vehicle. To obtain the necessary forms you can visit the state of Washington’s Department of Licensing website or call (360) 902-3770. When you are ready to donate your car, boat or RV, in order to transfer title correctly, the donor must sign the release on the title and complete the assignment to the new owner. In order to release liability of your donated vehicle, the state of Washington requires that you report the sale through the Department of Licensing website or in person at a vehicle licensing center. Though additional fees may apply when reporting the sale in person, reporting the sale through the Department of Licensing website is free. Once you have filed the report of sale you should keep the receipt as proof that the report has been filed. If you have filed a report through the Department of Licensing website you can print the receipt after completion of the report. If you need further information you can refer to the state of Washington’s Department of Licensing website.

The state of Washington does not require you to surrender your plates unless your donated vehicle has specialty plates. Regular license plates can simply be destroyed or recycled or remain with the vehicle.
