Charities, like Goodwill Industries, depend on charitable donations from the public in order to continue their work. With the economic downturn of the past year, raising money has become a challenge. At the same time, more people than ever need the services these organizations provide. One way they have found to raise funds is vehicle donation.

Often people have cars that are not worth very much, or may have broken down and aren’t worth fixing. They may be cars that were used by a child that is no longer in the home or by an older person who no longer drives. It isn’t worth the effort to try and sell the vehicle and auto salvage companies pay very little or sometimes even charge you to tow a car away. You can opt to donate a car to charity.

In addition to cars, boats, SUVs, trucks and even motorcycles can be donated. The charity picks up the car or other vehicle from the home of the donor within 24 to 48 hours of being called. A statement of value is given to the owner which verifies the value of the donation. This can be used for tax purposes. If you donate your car to a non-profit agency, you are eligible for a tax deduction.

Auto donation is a major fundraiser for charities. In many states, a car can be donated even if the title is lost. Laws on this do vary from state to state and are often based on the age and value of the vehicle. When you call to donate your car, you may ask if the title is required.

If you call a salvage yard to try to sell a vehicle that is not running, they may not be interested and may even charge to tow the car. If you call a charity, they will pick up the car for free and you know that you have done something nice for someone else. It’s better than haggling with the tow truck driver from an auto salvage business. With vehicle donation everyone wins.
